With more than two decades of experience at the BBC, Sally transitioned to waking up the nation after years as a sports news reporter, during which she interviewed stars such as tennis legend Roger Federer and Olympic diver Tom Daley.
Off-camera, Sally lives in Cheshire with her husband, son, and their adorable cavapoo dog, Sadie.

A Proud Liverpool Native
Born on August 5, 1971, in Birkenhead, Merseyside, Sally has strong roots in Liverpool.
She attended Upton Hall School FCJ, a Catholic girls’ grammar school established in 1849. Following her school years, Sally earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts and French at the University of Huddersfield.
Over 20 Years with the BBC
Sally began her career at BBC Radio Merseyside before transitioning to television as a sports newsreader for BBC North West Tonight in 2000.
After three years in regional broadcasting, she moved to the national stage as a BBC News sports presenter. Sally’s role often took her to breaking stories, as she explained to the Manchester Evening News: “My patch is going to be huge, so when a story breaks late at night or whatever, I get straight in my car and go wherever it might be. It’s really exciting because they’ve created this job specially.”
In 2011, Sally began appearing on BBC Breakfast as a freelance sports presenter, covering major events like the FIFA World Cup, Wimbledon, and Emma Raducanu’s 2021 US Open triumph. Her dedication paid off, and by October 2021, she became a regular face on the famous red sofa.
A Love for French Style
While studying at university, Sally spent some time living in France, which sparked her love of French fashion.
Speaking to Sunday Express S Magazine, Sally said: “Emmanuelle Alt (former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris) is my style icon. I lived in France while studying, so I appreciate French style and brands. The oldest piece in my wardrobe is a Sandro trench coat I bought in Paris years ago. It cost a fortune, but I wear it everywhere.”
A Private Family Life
Sally chooses to keep her personal life away from the public eye.
Her BBC profile confirms she is married with one child, a son who loves football and rugby. Sally has never disclosed the names of her husband or son, nor her son’s age.
However, in a rare glimpse, she once shared the story behind her favorite piece of jewelry. “When I had our son, my husband bought me a vintage aquamarine ring — ‘blue for a boy’ — from an antique jeweler in Richmond, London,” she told Sunday Express S Magazine.
Sally’s Adorable Dog Has Her Own Instagram
Sally is the proud owner of Sadie, a lovable cavapoo.
Sadie frequently appears on Sally’s Instagram and even has her own account, @sadievalentin. In 2020, Sally bought Sadie a stylish new collar to support the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, a Motor Neurone Disease charity founded by the late rugby player Doddie Weir.
Sally captioned a photo of Sadie wearing the accessory: “To celebrate Doddie’s 50th, I treated Sadie to a very smart @myname5doddie collar and lead. A change from her usual pink sparkly one!”
Award-Winning Journalism
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sally secured a series of exclusive interviews with footballer Marcus Rashford MBE about his campaign to end child food poverty.
The interviews drew millions of viewers and earned BBC Breakfast the “Scoop of the Year” award at the 2021 Royal Television Society Journalism Awards.
Sally said: “It was a real privilege to follow Marcus’ quest to end childhood food poverty. To be recognized with the RTS award is such an honor, and the BBC Breakfast team and I are thrilled to receive it.”
A Passion for Charity
Sally played a significant role in producing Rob Burrow: My Year with MND, a moving documentary about rugby league legend Rob Burrow’s battle with Motor Neurone Disease.
Writing for The Express, Sally said: “Rob’s determination inspired our team at BBC Breakfast. We knew if we could put this film together and share his story, the country would fall in love with him just as we did.”
The program won Best Documentary at the Sports Journalists’ Association Awards, which Sally proudly accepted after accompanying Rob to Downing Street to receive a Point of Light award.

When the COVID-19 lockdown began in March 2020, Sally revisited her musical passion. She posted a photo of her piano on Instagram with the caption: “Maybe it’s time to finally finish my piano exams. #grade8 #stayhome.”
